Can you win the lottery twice? Can you claim a lottery jackpot after a rare, near-death experience? These people did! Here are five unlikely events that actually happened in the history of the lottery.
Man from Horse Shoe Wins Lottery Twice
If it makes sense for anyone to be lucky, it’s someone who lives in a town called “Horse Shoe”! Ivan Gilbert, a self-employed painter, managed to win big in the N.C. Education Lottery—twice. He first won $100,000 in the Super Lucky 7s game in May 2012. In July 2014, he won another $1 million in the $120 Million Cash scratch off game.
Who needs to carry a lucky charm when you live in one?
Man Struck by Lightning, then Wins Lottery
There’s a one-in-a-million chance that you’ll be struck by lightning. Can you imagine surviving a lightning strike…and then going on to win the lottery? That’s exactly what happened to Peter McCathie, who survived a lightning strike when he was 14 years old and then won the lottery in July 2015 with his coworker, Diana Miller.
What’s even more unlikely: McCathie’s daughter survived a lightning strike similar to his while working as a wilderness guide in Manitoba, Canada. Hopefully winning the lottery runs in the family, too.
Elderly Woman Butts in Line, Wins Lottery
In 2013, two woman were waiting in line to make their purchase at a store in Zephyrhills, Florida. One, an older woman, cut in front of the other, who kindly let her pass. The older woman, Gloria Mackenzie, who was 84 years old at the time, went on to win $590,500,000 with the Powerball ticket she bought that day. Talk about good timing.
The woman who let her cut in line reportedly has no regrets about her generous actions, even though it may have cost her a fortune.
Man from Croatia is Accident-Prone, but Rich
A Croatian by the name of Frane Selak may be the luckiest man alive. Selak survived a train crash, being struck by a bus, driving his car off a cliff, being dropped from an airplane, having his bus crash into a river, and being in a car that went up in flames. It would be pretty hard to stay hopeful after all that misfortune.
His luck turned, however, when he won $1 million in the Croatian lottery. Even more incredible? After a taste of the luxury lifestyle, he decided to give away all of his newly won fortune, keeping only enough to pay for a hip replacement and to support him and his wife.
Man Wins Same Lottery Twice
Stephen Cooke, from Georgia, was thrilled when he realized that his Mega Millions lottery ticket had just won him $13 million. He was in possession of one of the three winning tickets in circulation. In the process of collecting his already astronomical winnings, Cooke realized that he actually possessed a second winning ticket from that same draw.
Instead of $13 million in winnings, he ended up going home with over $26 million. After his astounding double-win, Cooke reportedly said, “I hope I’ll never spend $13 million. That’s more money than I need.”
There are many astounding lottery stories that will make your jaw drop like these ones. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next winner with an incredible tale of good fortune!
